Writer and Director Martin Monk’s topical film Favourites (Favoriten) touches on the subject of absent fathers. This beautiful film is an officially selection at Cannes Film Festival. It competed in the Cinéfondation category. This beautifully shot live-action short is also been a selection for the BAFTA Student Award and stars Christian Dolezal (CopStories) and newcomer Lia Wilfing.
Synopsis: After falling out with her mother, rebellious Sofia wants to hitchhike to Italy in search of her biological father. In haste, she stuffs a few things in her backpack and sets off in the early hours of a Viennese summer morning. When she meets middle-aged Michael, who reluctantly agrees to give her a lift, the two strangers develop an unlikely friendship on their shared journey through the Austrian south.

German Director and screenwriter Martin Monk is of English and Russian descent. After studying History and Philosophy, he turned to fictional filmmaking, directing several shorts before being selected by Oscar winner Michael Haneke as an M.A. Directing student at Film Academy Vienna. Analogue photography, a passion since youth, remains a major source of inspiration for his cinematic work.
The Film Academy Vienna production owes its beautiful cinematography to Johannes Höß and was produced by Michaela Finis and edited by Felix Kalaivanan. Favourites (Favoriten) screened at Cannes on the 22nd of May at 11 a.m. as the first short in the Cinéfondation Programme 2 in the Salle Buñuel.
Who is Martin Monk?
Martin Monk (*1985 in Berlin) is a German film director, screenwriter and photographer. After initially studying history and philosophy he turned towards the cinema, directing several self-produced short films before being selected by Michael Haneke as a M.A. Directing student at Film Academy Vienna. His latest work Favourites traces the steps of a runaway girl in search of her father and premiered at the prestigious Cinéfondation during the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. The film was also nominated for the German short film prize and an official candidate for the European Film Awards (EFA).
