Los Angeles, CA (May, Date 2023). The Sperm Bank‘s writer and creator are Rob Scerbo & Jeremy Culhane. It shares a story of a young man recently diagnosed with cancer who takes a visit to a sperm bank. Based on the writer and star Rob Scerbo’s real life experiences with stage 4 testicular cancer.
The Sperm Bank is a dark comedy. It is about one of the bizarre, chaotic, existential, and life-affirming situations a cancer diagnosis can cause. Directed by Margaux Susi, this live action short film is in selection out of 8000 entries. Now it screens in contention at the OSCAR-qualifying Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
Logline: A young man called Rob is with stage 4 testicular cancer. At 23 years old Rob must now take the first big step. He must masturbate into a cup to protect a future he isn’t sure exists.
Cuban-Jewish director and actor Margaux Susi’s other shorts include the absurd-comedy, SUPER REAL SUPER GROUNDED. Which follows a struggling artist stuck in a terrible audition and BIRDS, BEES, & THREES which played at Austin Film Festival. As an actor, Margaux can be seen in the Hulu feature, CLOCK, directed by Alexis Jacknow. You can also see her in FX’S BETTER THINGS, and Netflix’s DEAR WHITE PEOPLE. Apple TV’s CENTRAL PARK, and Disney’s OLAF’S FROZEN ADVENTURE.
Named by Variety as one of “Hollywoodʼs New Leaders,” executive producer Andrew Carlberg has a wealth of credits. Notably as the producer of SKIN, which won an Academy Award for Live Action Short. And FEELING THROUGH which garnered an OSCAR-nomination.
THE SPERM BANK was produced by Grayson Propst (Netflix’s Glow, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm). Alongside Angela Giarratana (Hulu’s Minx, ABC’s Call You Mother). The stunning cinematography was shot by the Emmy Award winning director of photography Jack Schurman.
Co-writer and producer Jeremy Culhane is a comedian, actor, and writer with over 100k followers on TikTok. His credits include AMERICAN VANDAL HEATHERS, YES DAY, 9-1-1 and more. Rob & Jeremy’s friendship and creative partnership were built through conversations the two had while Rob was battling cancer.
