This live-action short film has been blazing through the festival circuit, it is taking home two Oscar-qualifying awards. Firstly at the prestigious Hollyshorts in Los Angeles. Secondly winning Best Short at British Independent Film Awards, and the Cannes Lion.
The British Parliament names it “required viewing” after its release. Surge is Aniel Karia’s debut feature film, and it won a Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival, and he is a rising star of British Independent Film.

Riz and his family are in the middle of preparing for a wedding celebration. At this moment the events unfolding in the outside world arrive suddenly on their doorstep. The result is a devastating and visceral feat of filmmaking and a poignant poetic cry from the heart

ABOUT ANEIL KARIA
Aneil Karia is a British director who began his career directing short films. He did BEAR starring Ben Whishaw. WORK a Film 4 financed short has a BAFTA and a BIFA nomination. His credits are TOP BOY, Channel 4’s PURE, and Kano’s TROUBLE.
Ben Whishaw won the World Cinema Best Actor Jury Prize at Sundance for his lead role in Surge. The production company Rooks Nest put it out in 2021. Recently, Aniel directed TEARDROPS for Kano.
ABOUT RIZ AHMED
Riz Ahmed is an award-winning actor, writer, producer, musician, and activist. He is an Emmy Award winner for his lead performance in HBO’s THE NIGHT OF. He is an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and SAG nominee for his lead performance in SOUND OF METAL. The National Board of Review, the IFP Gotham Awards credit him as Best Actor on Sound of Metal
Ahmed has a first Muslim nomination for the lead actor at the Oscars. He is the first to win a lead acting Emmy as a Muslim. MOGUL MOWGLI marked Ahmed’s production company Left Handed Films’ feature film debut. Ahmed co-writes, stars in, and produces Mogul Mowgli is, which Bassam Tariq directs. The film has a 2021 nomination for a BAFTA Award and Outstanding British Film.
Ahmed will star opposite Octavia Spencer in Amazon Studios’ psychological thriller ENCOUNTER, directed by Michael Pearce.

The Long Goodbye is in selection at prestigious international film festivals. A few of these festivals are The London Critics Circle Awards 2021 where it won the Best British/Irish Short Film, Palm Springs International ShortFest, Cannes 2021 where it won a Gold Lion, and two Silver Lions, Rhode Island, and many more. Therefore it was screened at BFI Southbank as part of a season curated by the Tape Collective.
