SAG Foundation President Explains Why ‘Selma’ Was Not Nominated

As the SAG Awards is over, people are still scratching their heads as to why Ava DuVernay’s, Selma, is not being recognized in any of the film categories.

HipHollywood caught up with the SAG Foundation President, JoBeth Williams, who explained that the film was not “subbed” or “shunned,” rather, it simply came out a little too late. “One of the best movies of the year, Selma, unfortunately it wasn’t finished in time. SAG-AFTRA members didn’t get to see it. There weren’t even any screenings and that’s heartbreaking.”

“We work on the studios, see what they can do to try and get films started earlier if they can so that they’ll be finished in time for our voters,” Williams said. “We have to have the nominations in at a certain time in order to then prepare for the show.”

SAG-AFTRA members, which include over 160,000 film and television performers, journalists and personalities world wide, vote and recognize outstanding performances in film and primetime television.
