“A Piece of Cake has the energy of an ‘Edgar Wright’ picture and the entertaining clarity of a ‘Ben Stiller’ comedy”.

Synopsis: When a desperate father discovers his daughter’s favorite cake decoration is illegal, he descends into a confectionery black market. Now he must make the ultimate parenting choice: break a birthday promise or break the law?
It’s a weekday breakfast, Jim (Rich Sommer – “Mad Men”) gives Claire (Natalie Britton) a goodbye kiss on his way out to work when he turns to realize his daughter Cora (Riona O’Donnell) thinks of him as the father who breaks his promise. To prove to his daughter otherwise, he takes the challenge to get her favorite decoration for the birthday cake.
After a good number of unsuccessful attempts to buy the decoration, a $20 tip sets him on a trip into the city. After a grueling drive, excusing himself from work and a down-the-rabbit-hole into a black market Jim heads back home exhausted, scared, and tired that he is breaking the law to fulfill his wish to his daughter.
At the black market, he encountered several fathers with far more desperate a need, than he could imagine. It seemed he had stumbled on a mine-field of silver cake decorations and a host of fathers willing to pay any price to keep their daughters happy. He deals an unreasonable amount for a twin pack of silver decorations and left with a palpitating heartbeat.
The film ends with Jim reading Cora’s favorite story to her from behind bars after confessing to the Police about breaking a host of traffic laws. It was interesting to discover that the silver decoration was not banned after all.
A Piece of Cake is a great comedy to watch, that pit the wits of a regular day dad against the black market of California. A delightful family comedy to watch, it reminds us that our kids are the reasons why we work in the first place, and they remain the priority of our lives.
A Piece of Cake is a short comedy film in the standard of a Hollywood picture. A Piece of Cake is funny, remarkable, interesting, and totally engaging for the whole family. It is boasts of the energy of an “Edgar Wright” picture and the entertaining clarity of a “Ben Stiller” comedy.
