The $7,000 Feature Film from Director Alejandro Montoya Marin made its Debut at a Private Screening at SXSW this March
Los Angeles, CA (May 2018) — Robert Rodriguez, the renowned director who famously catapulted himself to stardom with his $7,000 film El Mariachi, announced last year that he wanted to give five filmmakers the same opportunity to accomplish that feat. El Rey Network’s Rebel Without a Crew, now streaming on go90, follows these aspiring filmmakers while they try the impossible in only 14 days. To add to the pressure, they are also told their finished films will screen at SXSW in March of 2018. Alejandro Montoya Marin, one of the five hand-picked filmmakers, will premiere his $7,000 feature MONDAY at the acclaimed SOHO International Film Festival this June.
Montoya Marin, who was born in Texas, grew up in Mexico, and then studied film in Canada, already made some hefty accomplishments before his involvement on the show. The Albuquerque resident has screened his work at some of the most notable film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival, Raindance, The Napa Valley Film Festival, Hollyshorts, and more. Montoya Marin decided to adapt his award-winning short MONDAY and turn it into a micro-budget feature for the reality show.
“This was a crazy but fun experience that will hopefully show what we were able to accomplish under these extreme circumstances,” stated Montoya Marin. “The chance to make my first feature film under the mentorship of one of my idols is the proof that dreams can come true.”
‘Rebel’ Alejandro Montoya Marin on how he made his indie ‘Monday’
MONDAY follows pothead slacker Jim (Jamie Jung) who starts his Monday off by losing both his job and his girlfriend (Bonnie Gayle). He soon finds himself wrapped up in a turf war with rival drug cartels and has to outrun a pair of assassins (Anna Schatte, Sofia Embid). With his best friend, Paul (Kenneth McGlothin), Jim attempts to get his life back on track and survive the worst Monday possible. MONDAY is a music driven film that embodies the 80’s action-comedy spirit and attempts to put a new spin on the genre.
MONDAY will premiere at the SOHO International Film Festival on Friday, June 15th at 5:30 pm EST at New York’s Village East Cinema Auditorium #2.
