Look at Me by Nika Fehmiu at Tribeca Questions our Disconnect with Society

Writer/Director Nika Fehmiu’s live-action short is a story about the American inability to connect. The film finds new profound relevance in the COVID era and time of self-isolation, as it touches on all the ways that we are disconnected in society and how we detrimentally prioritize ourselves above all else. It is a film that makes us re-examine ourselves in the most crucial of times. Look at Me will receive its world premiere at the Oscar-qualifying Tribeca Film Festival, which will now be shown online due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Synopsis: On a New York City winter night, the fate of a young intoxicated boy is determined by his brief encounters with strangers, exposing a deeper underlying American truth. The modern-day yogi, the pseudo-social media activist, the young binge-drinkers, and the first generation American: all bound by their desire to be seen, yet blinded and divided by it, unable to look into the eyes of another.

Nika Fehmiu is a writer and director. She was born and raised in New York City after her parents immigrated from the former Yugoslavia during the war. Graduating from Middlebury College in 2017, Nika received a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics and Economics. During this time, she continued to self-produce, write, and direct several short films. She has been making short films for over a decade and her last two shorts were created in college. The Visitor focused on a story about the potential for human connection in the current technological age. The second, Honey Brown Eyes, was a love story between a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian woman in the midst of the Yugoslavian war in the 1990s.

Look At Me is Nika’s first short film created and produced since earning her degree. The film was supported by the IFP Fiscal Sponsorship program. Since graduating, Nika has written two short scripts and is developing her first feature and series.

The film is co-produced by Anton Vicente Kliot and Hannah Vicente Kliot. The stunning cinematography was created by Wayland Bell and the music by Curtis Colton Green.
