indieactivity: How did you get on the project? Did you audition? If you did, would still have got the part?
Laura: I did audition yes. I received a self-tape request and sent in a tape and then was asked back for a callback in the room with the director and producers.
indieactivity: What part of the story challenged you when you read it? What drove you to get on the project?
Laura: It was a big challenge to play Kate Middleton as she is such a well-known cultural icon, that I wanted to make sure to portray her as best as I could. Making sure to capture her mannerisms and vocal quality as well as her British accent were all challenges that contributed to the role. It was a wonderful challenge and I enjoyed every moment of it.
I was driven to the role as I knew it was a huge opportunity and I knew I had a big chance of getting it as I have often been told I resemble her. I was so happy for the opportunity to portray such a well-known and well-loved figure.
indieactivity: You’re not new to indie films. What do you enjoy about the work that keeps you working?
Laura: I love telling stories. To delve into a character and to understand why they do what they do. To try to find myself within each character and what drives them is always the most exciting part for me.
indieactivity: Give example of a direction you received during the production?
Laura: Menhaj Huda was a wonderful director to work with. He was incredibly calm and created a really wonderful working environment for the actors to just play and allow the scenes to develop naturally.
I would say all that he was definitely on top of my accent and made sure to correct me if I said anything that didn’t sound British enough!
indieactivity: How did you create your character from ground up?
Laura: I started by researching Kate as much as possible. Watching all documentaries and interviews on her and really trying to differentiate between the Kate we see in public and the Kate she is in private.
indieactivity: Describe your responsibility? Did it fire you up? What scenes where difficult to shoot?
Laura: I wouldn’t say I was scared, but I definitely felt the pressure to deliver a solid performance because I was playing a real person. Not only a real person but someone that people have followed and adored for years. I would say that most of the scenes were really enjoyable to shoot as the script was very well written. Working with such a solid cast and crew as well really made filming a blast.
indieactivity: What did you take away from the film production?
Laura: This project was really special to me. I made amazing friendships and relationships and it was just so great to come to work every day and laugh and create and do what you love to do. I’m so excited to see the finish product.
indieactivity: What do you like most about the director, and his/her collaboration with his/her team?
Laura: Menhaj was amazing. He was very collaborative and open and easy to communicate with. truly an actors dream director. He knew what he wanted and it was so enjoyable to be a part of his creative vision.
indieactivity: What is next for you?
Laura: I am working on a Thriller called “Inbreds” about a woman who has come to a small town in search of her missing husband. It is a total departure from this role and a very dark and gritty role.
indieactivity: What advice do you give actors regarding what you learnt on the project?
Laura: I would say to prepare as much as possible so that you can come to set and just play and have fun and live truthfully in the scene. Do the work and it will pay off.
