ACTOR TALK: ‘It’s Been A While I Played The Villain’, Lamman Rucker on Black Coffee
After a successful run in AMC Theatres, Image Entertainment released on DVD and Digital Download the film “Black Coffee” staring Lamman Rucker (“Why Did I Get Married?”) on April 8.
Robert (Darrin Henson) meets his soulmate Morgan (Gabrielle Dennis) after being fired from his father’s company. As things heat up, Morgan’s ex-husband (Lamman Rucker) vows to get her back and Robert’s gold-digging ex-girlfriend (Erica Hubbard) returns with an agenda.
It’s been a while since Lamman Rucker has played a character that can be called the villain. “He really isn’t a likeable guy and that is significantly different from most of the characters people have seen me play. He’s kind of a jerk. Deep down he does care for Morgan,” Rucker said.
“I think really what’s happening is people are adapting to the technology that has become available. Black people aren’t often considered mainstream,” Rucker said. “We have also been responsible for writing our own stories. I think it’s encouraging that we have the knowledge and talent and skill. I am excited about it.”
Both Henson and Rucker are excited about the flux of African-American film projects that show the demographic in a positive light. According to Henson, “The state of black film is getting stronger and more creative and all we have to keep doing is the work.”
