indieactivity : Wow! It’s really you in person?! This is thrilling!
James Pratt : Yes! It is. And I am thrilled too!
indieactivity : We’ve much to talk about! So, I’ll keep this short?!
James Pratt : Thank you. I appreciate it. You just go ahead. Hit me!
indieactivity : How did you get connected to “On Halloween”? Did you have to audition? If you did, would you still have got the part?
James Pratt : I had worked with the director on his previous film, The Half Dead several years earlier. Then randomly I received a phone call from him saying he was in the middle of writing a new feature film. The initial call was fairly brief just saying, he was writing a role for me if I was interested and was shooting soon. I was very fortunate.
indieactivity : As one of the main cast on the project, how did this ‘choice’ work for you?
James Pratt : I enjoyed the creativity and openness to make the character my own. One of the nice things about shooting this film was I had the opportunity in pre-production to meet with and spend time just hanging out with the actors whom are in my characters storyline. This doesn’t happen always on feature films, so the result was our characters had a bond that shows on screen because when it came time to shooting we had already built trust and were relaxed.
indieactivity : What part of the story challenged you when you read it? What drove you to get on the project?
James Pratt : To be honest, I’m not a huge horror fan, so initially my thoughts were let’s read the script and see from there, however once I read it I could see it was going to be a lot of fun. I loved the levels my character has.
indieactivity : You’re not new to indie films. What do you enjoy about the work that keeps you working?
James Pratt : I really enjoy mixing up my work, so when doing an indie project, it’s always fun. One of the clear distinctions you find on indie films is more passion and drive from the cast and crew whom are working on it. You find many entertainment professionals are working on an indie project because they love the story (script) and not for money, so this mind-set brings out great motivation and often more inspiring work.
indieactivity : Give an example of a direction you received from the director during the production of “On Halloween”?
James Pratt : There were times we were encouraged to Ad-Lib or continue improvising our scenes to get some extra punch in the scene. It really works.
indieactivity : How did you create your character (Ethan Rodgers) from ground up?
James Pratt : The main way was with questions and communicating with the other actors in rehearsal, for me on this film it was asking, which part of LA am I from? Who is the smartest person in the room in my scenes?
indieactivity : As main cast on the film, describe the feeling of responsibility that you shouldered. Where you scared? Or did it fire you up? What scenes where difficult to shoot?
James Pratt : I was really thankful to be involved in the film, so I worked hard on making the most of the opportunity, I knew a couple of the other actors from previous work as well so It was relaxed on set. However, shooting late at night did take its toll towards the end of production as sometimes we were finishing up at sunrise.
indieactivity : Explain one creative choice you made on set during production?
James Pratt : There is some terrific improvisation which didn’t make the final cut but was a choice I made, I also would ask the director for one more take once we had the shot done, this take I would try and give something new, something really bold for the editor in post to consider.
indieactivity : What did you take away from the film production?
James Pratt : The experience was like a film intensive, a great work out on acting, conserving energy and working layering a character.
indieactivity : What do you like most about the director, and his/her collaboration with his/her team?
James Pratt : The freedom and trust for me to make the character my own, and not be the kind of director who micro manages.
indieactivity : What is next for you?
James Pratt : I am about to start shooting next month the feature film, Malibu Crush. This is something I am extremely excited to be a part of. It’s a road trip comedy in the style of a Farrelly Brothers film. I play one of the leads, Michael with the story revolving around two best friends who pretend to be highly acclaimed film school students from Malibu in order to stop a wedding and declare there love to a long-lost love.
indieactivity : What advice do you give actors regarding what you learnt on the project?
James Pratt : To just enjoy the ride, I have a friend in Hollywood whose one of the highest paid writers in film, she said a great quote to me a couple years ago “It’s not about where you live or what big house you have, you can own a big house by working a horrible job you don’t like for years; instead, life is about doing what you love whether that’s in Hollywood or New York or Kansas.”
