journalist. She supports The Spotlight Initiative, originated by the United Nations and the European Union. The Spotlight Initiative highlights the problem of violence against women and girls in Latin America beginning in Mexico.

Through the Spotlight Initiative – Latin America, the European Union and the United Nations Organization will finance programs to eradicate violence against women and girls in Mexico. The Spotlight Initiative Latin America was born due to the alarming number of cases of gender violence in the region. As part of the activities of the official launch of The Spotlight Initiative Latin America, Jackeline Cacho visited Mexico City, the first stop on the promotion tour in November 2018 to initiate dissemination activities.

While in Mexico, Spotlight Champion Ambassador Jackeline Cacho held meetings and interviews with national and local media. She was in charge of putting a face and giving a voice to thousands of women who are suffering some type of violence.

With the financial contribution of 55 million euros for Latin America from the European Union in conjunction with the United Nations (UN), new and innovative programs will be encouraged in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico to eradicate femicide in these countries and to help women and girls live free of violence.

In 2016 alone: 254 women and girls were murdered in Argentina, 349 in El Salvador, 211 in Guatemala, 466 in Honduras and 2,813 in Mexico. The Spotlight Initiative will work closely with civil society, United Nations agencies and the governments of the five beneficiary countries in order to provide comprehensive, high-impact interventions that can save the lives of women and girls.

“This initiative reaffirms our commitment to the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls by the year 2030,” said the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Amina Mohammed, who recalled that the five selected countries showed the political courage to face and pretend to end feminicide, a crime that costs the lives of 12 women a day in Latin America.

For her part, Jackeline Cacho served during the General Assembly of the UN as a master of ceremonies and moderator of the event. With her participation she will motivate the community in Latin America to join this great initiative for the next four years.

It is truly an honor to support this great project and be the promoter of this important initiative that will impact our community. We all have to work together to say: Not one more. It is everyone’s job,” said Jackeline Cacho.
