My name is Robert Berlin and I’m an American Method Actor. I’m from Connecticut and I moved to New York City to be an actor and I always wanted to learn the Method. When I was a kid I grew up with four girls, I used to play a lot of sports and I wasn’t allowed to dance or sing or be in acting classes. My sisters and cousins would act and I would dream of myself being on the stage, well now I’m living my dream. Robert Berlin has worked on NBC’s Law and Order SVU and his latest work was on NBC’s The Blacklist. Robert can be seen in the NAACP Image Award nominee Home the Film acting with HBO series, The Wire, Gbenga Akinnagbe. Robert plays lead character Steven in The Closer Movie. Robert Berlin can be seen on Daphne Danielle DaphneDtv

Did you study acting
So I was living in Connecticut and I was working on a truck and I wasn’t living my dream. I was living with my grandmother at the time and she was intuitive and knew that I wanted to be an actor, knew I wanted to perform, so I came home from work and she threw a newspaper down on the table and it had an ad for Stella Adler Conservatory, so I took that ad and I always wanted to be the best actor I could be, to learn the craft of acting. So she helped me to save my money and we saved my money and I moved to New York to be an actor.
What acting technique do you use
So I went to New York City and I trained at Stella Adler Conservatory. From there I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to study with Tony Greco, who also taught Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Tony Greco trained under Lee Strasberg, so he taught me the Strasberg Method. I’m very blessed to have been in that class, it’s the type of work that I use today. I’m a serious guy! With a face like mine! What else would I be, Right! I’m an American Method Actor.
What wrong impressions do actors hold about acting
That Acting is easy and that it is not a lot of work. It’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of consistent, hard work. Actors don’t think it’s work. It’s work. You got to consistently work. I learned my craft. I have a craft of acting. I came to New York City from Connecticut to learn my craft.
Do you take courses to improve your craft
I think that’s important. I think you should take courses to improve your craft but I came here to New York City and I studied continuously for a number of years, so I feel solid in who I am as an actor in the training aspect of things but I consistently work. I work on Daphne Danielle@DaphneDtvYouTube channel. I due a consistent amount of work there that helps my instrument, it helps who I am as an actor, plus I get a number of auditions and I’m consistently working on sets so it keeps me fluid, keeps me working.
What acting books do you read
This book right here. Strasberg at the Actors Studio. Edited by Robert H. Hethmon. Get this book! This is a very important book right here. I take it everywhere I go. I take it on sets with me. It keeps me focused, it keeps me in the moment. It helps me with my characters. I recommend this. This is Lee Strasberg. I feel like he’s teaching me when I read it. This one right here. Get this book!
How do you keep fit as an actor
I go to the gym. I eat well, I read books, I watch movies and I continuously act. I work.
When you’re offered a role, what do you do next
I read the script and I allow my first impressions to start to guide me
How do you take a character in a script to a honest, believable and breathing person
Well, I investigate. I take clues from the script like a detective. I’m like a detective. I take the script, I pull it apart. I look for clues. What time period? Where does he work? How does he eat? Where does he live? What kind of speech pattern does he have? Then I put it into my body, then I start to work, I start to layer the character, because I trained and I know my craft and how I go to work and my style and what it is, I need as an actor, and what it is, I give as an actor.
How do you stay fresh on set
Discipline and Work. I stay Creative. I continuously work. Make choices. Continuously keep myself involved in what it is I’m doing that day.
Describe a memorable character you played
I have been working on Daphne Danielle DaphneDtv YouTube and I got to play, Donald Trump. Nobody would ever cast me as Donald Trump. But Daphne Danielle cast me as Donald Trump and it took my acting to another level because he was completely different than I was. It taught me about rhythms of a character and how a character moves. It gave me a lot of insight into my acting.
Explain one creative choice you took on set
When I’m on a set, I like to do my work. I don’t like to talk. I don’t like to joke around. I work. I don’t play games. I work. I take the craft of acting seriously.
What do you want most from a director
I want a director who understands me as an actor. A director who brings me ideas and I bring ideas and we collaborate. We form a relationship and a bond together where we expand ideas and they respect me and I respect them.
What actors do you long to work with
That’s easy. Daniel Day Lewis. Daniel Day Lewis. I want to work with Daniel Day Lewis.
Why
His dedication to the craft of acting. His love for it. His consistency. The way he goes to work. I relate to that.
What advice would you give to actors
To consistently work. To learn your craft and continuously work. Learn your craft. Study acting. It’s work. Trust me. It’s work. It’s no joke. It’s work.
