Tell us a bit about yourself, education interests and future plans

My name is Tosin Akinwoye and I am a Digital Effects Technical Director, assisting in the creation of visual effects for various feature films for the US and UK markets. A few of my most recent film projects being Thor: The Dark World, Transcendence, Godzilla and Interstellar. I have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and a Masters Degree in Digital Effects from Bournemouth University UK, one of the world’s leading animation institutions. I intend to continue creating beautiful images for Film.

Is this what you have always wanted to do

Growing up, I wanted to become some sort of computer guru. I had dabbled into some computer programming and later motion graphic design. During the days I worked in TV and Broadcast, I knew I had the interest for both the production and post-production side of film. Studying the digital effects course kind of pulled everything together and set me on purpose.

Give us an idea of a regular day at work

Most days usually start with going to dailies. This is where I present the progress and milestones on my work to leads and CG supervisors and also receive some form of feedback. From there, I return to my desk to set daily milestones for upcoming tasks as well as address the notes given to me by the supervisors. Because I always work with a team, this usually involves a lot of interaction with several other intelligent and talented artists and TDs either downstream or upstream the visual effects pipeline.

What does a TD do

A Technical Director (TD) is a problem solver. More importantly, TDs apply their skills and experience in precisely interpreting a client’s brief according to the vision and direction of the CG or visual effects supervisor.

What part of Interstellar did you work on

In Interstellar, I was responsible for generating the CG thrusters that flamed from some of the space ships in the movie.

What advice do you give to growing artistes
n order to succeed in this field, they must first develop a problem solving attitude. Technically, you must learn to code and also develop an interest in physics and mathematics. Lastly, you must understand that working in film always involves team work and a good attitude and team spirit can be a more valuable asset than your actual skill level.

What is next for you, ILM?

For now, I think it’s the Moving Picture Company (MPC)
