Hi, I am Michelle Pretorius, and my body of work include TV programs, short films, music videos, ad’s and documentaries. I am the official videographer for The Parlotones (South Africa’s equivalent to Coldplay) and just completed a feature length feature documentary on their history and career.

How would you describe your work as a director
I love stepping into another world and exploring and trying to understand a reality that is not my own. I usually identify with some part of my characters or their situation.

How did you get into directing
I love telling stories and seeing them visualize as I see them in my mind’s eye.

How do you choose a project to direct
If I identify with the characters story and my curiosity is aroused as to how they came to be at that point.

What uniqueness can female directors bring to Film or TV or Cinema
Female directors are less egocentric, they listen more than trying to impose their point of view on the project.

I have since the beginning learnt by practically doing the job, for example editing I learnt while sitting with my editors and filming from my camera person

What books do you read
To be honest I don’t have time to read currently. I watch a lot of films though

Why will you choose an actor, writer or producer. What do you look for
Talent and the ability to work peacefully within a team

When you are offered a job, what thing do you put in place to deliver a good job
A lot of research

Briefly explain your latest work
It is a music documentary, set against the background of 1994 and the fall of apartheid

Explain key challenges on your last film
I had to use a lot of archival footage, which I pre selected bits from to cut down on the editors time and thus decrease costs.

What thing or situation helps you during production
Good organization

Explain one creative choice you took on set
I decided to use abstract images with old non related footage to enhance the current day documentary

The same as for anyone else, a project that speaks to you

How can filmmakers finance their projects
Apply for funding from for example, National Film Funds

What do you want from an actor in production
Dedication and preparation in terms of research

How do you prefer to work with a producer during a production
I make myself available nearly any time and like to have a close relationship with my producers.

What do you think a female director can do to get into the film industry
The same as any male, grab any opportunity that comes your way

Michelle Pretorius’ body of work include TV programs, short films, music videos, ad’s and documentaries. I am the official videographer for The Parlotones (South Africa’s equivalent to Coldplay) and just completed a feature length feature documentary on their history and career.

The reason I make films is quite simple – I love stepping into another world and exploring and trying to understand a reality that is not my own – whether it is the reality of South Africa’s most famous rock stars or the plight of a young teacher teaching disadvantaged children in a rural farm school in the remote Northern Cape, South Africa…
