The Equity Showcase/Cayle Chernin Memorial Fund is proud to announce that Dorothy Atabong is the 2020 Award Winner in the Media Arts: Development for the 9th annual Cayle Chernin Awards. Her screenplay titled “Eye of the Veil” was selected as the winner in the final list which included Mikaela Davies’ Chipped and Genevieve Fontaine: 48 Hours Before are the finalists.
Synopsis: Jo, a closeted black attorney, is struggling with the rape and unexpected pregnancy of her white partner Frances. When Frances dies unexpectedly during childbirth, Jo must search within to come to terms with her own sexuality, and her humanity, before seeking custody of their newborn son.
Established in 2012 to honour the life and work of actor, documentary filmmaker, writer, teacher and mentor Cayle Chernin (1947 – 2011). The Cayle Chernin Awards are presented to emerging or discipline transitioning female artists to assist in the creation of a new work. About Cayle Chernin: Her career spanned four decades in film and on stage, developing new works and encouraging young artists. Her professional journey began co-starring in Don Shebib’s 1969 classic film Goin’ Down the Road and came to a close with Mr. Shebib’s acclaimed sequel Down The Road Again.

Born and raised in Cameroon, Central Africa and educated in the USA and Canada, Dorothy A. Atabong is an award-winning Actor, Writer, Producer, and Director. She obtained a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Michigan, before moving on to graduate from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City.
She’s been featured in the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, Now Magazine, BBC World Cup Magazine, ScreenAfrica, and was invited to the Women in The Director’s Chair Workshop in Banff Canada. Her screenplay Daisy’s Heart won 2011 Best Low Budget Script at the Female Eye Film Festival, and in 2020 her Screenplay Eye of the Veil was short-listed for the Fade In Awards and BlueCat.
Dorothy’s short film Sound Of Tears, produced under her company Ayinke Films Inc., marked her directorial debut. It has since screened at over 35 film festivals worldwide and garnered numerous nominations and awards including the Africa Movie Academy Award in 2015.
