A Short Biography of Carlos Gómez-Mira
Everyone says the same things about themselves. We just want to say one thing: “Take a few moments to look at our work and what we have to offer. If your first impression is good enough for us to deserve your attention, then meet us and decide by yourself.” We are ThinkWild. And we live and work in beautiful Madrid, in a small town called Las Rozas. We like it here. Our studio is located in a famous building called ‘Alius’, full of light and open space.
The Carlos Gómez-Mira Interview
indieactivity: What is your film about?
Carlos Gómez-Mira (CGM): Fly has been selected in more than 120 festivals around the globe. It has won more than 20 international awards and was nominated for Best AnimaCon Short at the 35 Goya Awards in Spain in 2021. That nomination gave the film a lot of attention in the media, as we were the short with the lowest budget and team by far.
Give the full Official Synopsis for your film?
Carlos Gómez-Mira (CGM): Fly is the story of a bird that has a deformed wing that prevents it from migrating. Abandoned by his flock, he sinks in despair. Everything changes the day Pio-Pio appears. This defenseless chick gives him joy and a sense of purpose in life. Until one day destiny makes him do things that he wouldn’t even do for himself, such as flying.
Development & Financing?
Carlos Gómez-Mira (CGM): We were working on a commissioned film to help an NGO, and we had an idea that we thought it was suitable for our first short film. We worked on the script for about a month, and we thought we had something special there. So we jumped into the void and started working on it, not knowing if we could ever finish it, because we were financing it with our own money. We had a little help from an Official Organization in Madrid, but that was all. So it was all our own money!! And a lot of our spare time!
Production?
Carlos Gómez-Mira (CGM): We started pre production around June 2018. And we produced it along the next two years. Since we were mostly only two people who were working on the visuals of the film (animation, editing, composing, etc.) and we could only work on it after our work day or during the weekends, (it was a personal project of the studio, but we couldn’t give more hours to it) it took us a lot of time to finish it. We rendered the last shot on July 2020, and for the last months before that we were working on the music and the sound design as well. We finished it at the end of August 2020..
Festival Preparation & Strategy?
Carlos Gómez-Mira (CGM): We hired a company in Spain called Selected Films distribution and they have been the ones who have submitted Fly to all the festivals. They have done a great job so far.
The Release?
CGM: It was released at a short festival in Madrid last year. It was in the middle of the pandemic, so most of the screenings have been online at the beginning.
Advice from the Filmmaker?
CGM: Just fly. Follow your dreams, blow away your fears, spread your wings, and fly. But it’s a “looooong” process, so have a lot of patience. But if you believe in it, just do it. And have fun. Otherwise, it’s not worth it.
