Behind The Scenes on The Boatman with Greg Morgan and Oscar Torre

We loved making ‘The Boatman’! We hope you find it as enjoyable as we did making it. We made it for you.

The idea for The Boatman originally came from Producer Jeanne Flynn-Morgan. Her idea of a trucker crossing the lonely highways who would come across the dead and dying from auto accidents. The dead would tell him their dying words, last gasps. From this the man would learn to become a better person.

Greg took this idea and created another world from it. That of the Mexican coyote bringing the migrants across the Rio Grande and how the dead he came across would change him. Then float this story over the context of Greek mythology. Greg brought on Duke Addleman, his previous co-writer on Substance of Things Hoped For, to co-write the concept with him. After several versions and drafts, the duo finished the screenplay and Greg & Jeanne Morgan began the task of producing it into a film.

Casting was enjoyable, but long. After many months of seeing hundreds of applicants, we decided on the first person that read for the role of “Elena” and the first person the we spoke to regarding the role of “Miguel”. “Why did we keep going?”, we wondered.

From Officer Vasquez in Hangover 3, to Miguel in The Boatman, Oscar Torre is Magnificent

The shoot was four weeks long. Three weeks in the deserts and locations of Lancaster, California and one week in Needles, California for all of the river sequences. A crew and cast of about thirty people were wonderful. Spirits were high and the shoot went flawlessly. Unheard of for an independent feature of this budget.

Greg edited the film at his home in Los Angeles on Adobe Premiere as well as did the sound editing and sound design. Two months later it was done at the end of October 2014.
