Los Angeles, CA. BABA is the second instalment of Maziyar Khatam’s offbeat, comedy-drama short film series. The film is a personal homage to Maziyar’s upbringing and uses real-life people cast from Toronto. This live-action short film will screen at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, the film also serves as a proof of concept for his debut feature film. It also won the Best Canadian Short Film at Vancouver International Film Festival.
Logline: A middle-aged Iranian man makes a desperate bid to keep his apartment as his relationship with his son unravels.
The story opens with a middle-aged Iranian man (Amir Zavosh) caught in a shouting match with his landlord. The gentleman is behind on his rent, and his neighbors constantly complain about his partying at night. The more the landlord (James Choy) yells, the more the man says he doesn’t understand English.
Maziyar is an Iranian-Canadian Writer, Director and Actor with a passion for telling offbeat and revealing stories. His first short film BUMP which he wrote, starred in, and directed was an official selection at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

This film received the award for Best Canadian Short Film at the 2022 Vancouver International Film Festival. Currently, Maziyar is wrapping up development on his debut feature film that ColorCreative will be producing.
Baba‘s success rests on a great script by Khatam. The excellent direction from Anya Chirkova and Meran Ismailsoy. The two shot the entire film in an narrow apartment. Plus, there is the grounded performances from Khatam and Amir Zavosh who is the father. All these make for an entertaining short.
