Press Release: AN AVOCADO PIT challenges societal norms

Los Angeles (September 7, 2023). Ary Zara is the director and writer for An Avocado Pit. It follows the meeting of Larissa, a trans woman, and Cláudio, a cis man with wit and sensitivity. We follow these two worlds colliding in a heartwarming story free from violence, but rather filled with light and hope.

An Avocado Pit won the OSCAR qualifying awards at both Outfest and Guadalajara International Film Festival (2023). The Grand Jury Special Mention for Best Lead Acting at the AFI Festival (2022). Alongside both the Best Queer Short Award. And International Student Prize at Festival du Court Métrage de Clermont Ferrand France (2023). As well as multiple other nominations and awards globally. This gorgeous short film is in qualification for a 2024 Academy® Award.

Logline: An empowering story of love and growth. Two polar opposite lives coming together to enjoy a beautiful evening side by side. Dancing their differences away and giving us hope for a brighter future.

Director Ary Zara is a transgender person, activist, writer and director. He studied Cinema in Lisbon and Austin, with An Avocado Pit being his debut short film. An Avocado Pit premiered in 2022. It received awards at Clermont-Ferrand, Indie Lisboa, AFI FEST, Brest European SFF and Regard. This work and recognition put Ary for selection as a writer for Torino Film Lab 2023. There he will be developing his first feature film.

Andreia Nunes and Frederico Serra are the producers for An Avocadeo Pit. Andreia Nunes is an executive, and line producer in Portugal. Having developed many projects for cinema and TV over the years. In 2020, she founded Wonder Maria Filmes with 3 long-term friends. Their ambition is to create, and produce projects with social and political relevance.

Frederico Serra is one of the founders of Take It Easy Films. He has been a producer of numerous titles. The most acclaimed being An Avocadeo Pit and the feature film SADNESS AND JOY IN THE LIFE OF GIRAFFES. Alongside creating, he was the president of the Portuguese Producers’ Association from 2019-2021.

The film stars Portuguese actor Ivo Canelas, and trans actress Gaya de Medeiros. The beautiful cinematography is the creation of Leandro Ferrão. The production company TAKE IT EASY as well as being distribution Travelling Distribution.
