My Week with Maisy by Mika Simmons short stars Dame Joanna Lumley qualifies to be considered for the 78th BAFTA Film Awards

Los Angeles, CA (September 26, 2024). Director Mika Simmons’ latest work My Week with Maisy is a poignant and often hilarious short. It centers around the beautiful juxtaposition of life and death. The story follows uptight retiree Joanna Lumley (as Mrs. Foster) as she begins chemotherapy with a precocious child. Who is Ellie-Mae Siame (Maisy), sparking an unlikely bond signaling newfound hope.

The film screens at numerous prestigious film festivals including Flickerfest, Carmarthen Bay and HollyShorts. It took home the Diversity Award at Short Shorts Film Festival and Best Women’s Short at Cleveland International Film Festival. Its a qualification for consideration for the 2025 BAFTAs.

Mika Simmons (Director) is a British Actress and Filmmaker. Her directorial debut, Rain Stops Play, won the Silver Remi for best comedy at Houston World Film Festival. In 2021, Mika won Best International Director for her second short Breach at Portland Film Festival. As an actress Mika has played in a diverse range of work on stage and screen, include Showtrial (BBC). Frenchman’s Creek (ITV), Unforgotten (ITV) and Balcony which went on to win the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Upcoming work includes feature film The People Before (Sea High Productions) Professor T (ITV) and Waterloo Road (BBC). In January 2021, Mika is a feature as one of Harper’s Bazaar’s female Visionaries. In December ‘21, You Magazine chose to feature Mika as one of their extraordinary women of the year.

French Fancy Productions is by it founder Georgina French to promote the female voice and imagination in film. Working in collaboration with emerging and established talent, Georgina has produced numerous short films. Including BFI Network backed Dream Big, written & directed by Pip Swallow, starring Rhoda Ofori-Attah and Steen Raskopoulos. From A Strange Land, written and directed by Caroline Steinbeis and starring Amanda Abbington and Deborah Findlay. Charlie’s Freedom directed by BAFTA award winner Rachel Tillotson, starring Clare Perkins. What happened to Evie, directed by BAFTA award winner Kate Cheeseman. Which premiered at the Oscar qualifying 30th Galway Film Fleadh, where it won ‘Best International Short Fiction’. Nothing Important directed by Tara FitzGerald, starring Rachael Stirling and Linda Marlowe. Which received its world premiere at the BAFTA qualifying Palm Springs ShortFest. Georgina is currently developing a slate of features. Which includes feel-good comedy drama Valerie & Me directed by BIFA nominee Jane Gull.

Screenwriter Mark Oxtoby is a multi-award winning actor, writer and short filmmaker. He has worked extensively in theater, TV & film for over 30 years. With work including Back to the Future – the Musical (West End), Oh! What a Lovely War (National Theatre) and The Phantom of the Opera (West End).

Dame Joanna Lumley is an actress, presenter, producer, author and activist. She won two BAFTA TV Awards for her role as Patsy Stone in the much beloved BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. In 2017 was honored with the BAFTA Fellowship award. Her credits include The New Avengers, Ella Enchanted and The Wolf of Wall Street. She was made a Dame (DBE) in 2022.

This delightful short has qualified for the 2025 BAFTAs. It will screen at the BAFTA qualifying Show Me Shorts next month. My Week With Maisy” has the support of the Create Health Foundation.
