Ava DuVernay give us an glimpse into the sub-consciousness and emotions of the character of Martin Luther (played by David Oyelowo), as she call it a warp on a scene in Selma.

Feelings are a huge concern for actors. There is almost nothing except for physical appearance, that an actor agonizes about more than his feelings. Directors need to be able to function in the presence of actors in such a way that allows the actors to keep their feelings alive, and at the same time allows the director to keep his own feelings alive.

The feeling level is the level at which connection, intuition, and all good work happens. And the directors relationships with the actors and with the characters are relationships of emotional intimacy. The director need to feel everything that  happens to the characters.
